Zone 3 winters bottom out between -40°F and -30°F. That rules out most of what garden centers sell, which is why this collection is the shortest one on our site — 53 plants, every one of them proven to come back after a Zone 3 winter. Expect spruce, arborvitae, juniper, hardy lilac and red twig dogwood: the plants that built windbreaks across the northern plains. Each is garden-center quality, shipped nationwide, and guaranteed to arrive alive and thriving.

Planting in Zone 3? Get plants in the ground by late summer so roots establish before freeze-up, and mulch deeply the first winter. Skip anything marginal — in Zone 3 a plant rated one zone too warm is a plant you replace.
