Nothing beats a living privacy screen: it's quieter than a fence, prettier in every season, and it actually gets better with age. The catch is that not every evergreen is built for the job. You want three things — fast growth, dense year-round foliage, and a shape that knits together into a solid wall. Here are the trees we'd plant, and the spacing tricks that make or break the result.
The workhorse: Green Giant Arborvitae
If you asked us for one privacy tree, it'd be the Green Giant Arborvitae. It can put on 3 feet a year, stays lush green from the ground up, and forms a seamless screen faster than almost anything else. Space them 5 to 6 feet apart for a tight wall, or up to 8 feet if you're patient and want each tree to show its full form.
When you want blue, or a narrower footprint
Columnar junipers are the move when you love blue foliage or you're tight on width. They stay narrow and upright, so you can line a property edge without them sprawling into the yard:
- Spartan Juniper — fast, rich dark green, and reliably dense; a privacy-screen favorite.
- Blue Arrow Juniper — pencil-thin and steel-blue, perfect for tight spaces.
- Sky Rocket Juniper — the narrowest columnar juniper we grow, for a crisp vertical line.
Because these stay slim, plant them closer — roughly 3 to 4 feet apart — so their columns overlap into a continuous hedge.
For a big, bold windbreak
If you've got acreage and want height and heft, reach for a spruce. The Norway Spruce grows fast, gets large, and makes a superb windbreak and privacy barrier on a bigger property. Give these room — 10 to 12 feet apart — because they'll want it in a few years.
Three tricks for a screen that works
- Stagger your rows. On wider spots, plant a zig-zag double row instead of a single line. You get a denser, gap-free screen and a safety net if one tree struggles.
- Match the tree to your zone. A privacy screen is a long-term investment — check that your grow zone falls inside each tree's range before you commit to a whole row.
- Water the whole line evenly. A soaker hose along the row keeps every tree growing at the same pace, so your screen fills in level instead of patchy.
Plant thoughtfully now and in just a few seasons you'll have a green wall that a fence could never compete with.
